Congratulations on your fresh ink from Primitive Tattoo Bali!
At Primitive Tattoo Bali in Seminyak, proper tattoo aftercare is essential for optimal healing and long-lasting results. Now that the hard part is done, the aftercare is up to you to keep this art looking good for years to come. This comprehensive tattoo aftercare guide provides professional instructions from our expert artists to ensure your new ink heals beautifully in Bali’s tropical climate and maintains vibrant color for life.
Remember fresh tattoos can and will stain bed sheets, couches and other fabrics
Let the tattoo get lots of air, keeping it aggressively wrapped up for too long can create problems, more isn’t better.
Our tattoo artists will either wrap your fresh tattoo or use second skin and they will advise you on how long to keep it on, re-application etc. Also you can purchase after care from us directly at checkout.
The following is a general tattoo aftercare guide for healing your tattoo in Bali’s climate.
Complete Tattoo Aftercare Instructions
1. Initial Cleaning
- Keep the bandage on (1hr for wrap) and (24hrs for 2nd skin)
- Wash your hands before touching your tattoo.
- Gently wash the tattoo with lukewarm water and fragrance-free soap.
- Pat dry with a clean paper towel or let it air dry.
2. Moisturize Regularly
- Apply a thin layer of tattoo-friendly aftercare ointment or lotion (applying 2-5 times per day)
- Do not over-apply; let the tattoo breathe
3. Use Proper Aftercare Products
- Choose fragrance-free, alcohol-free, non-petroleum products (through at least the first week/itching phase)
- Common options (outside Indonesia): Aquaphor, Hustle Butter, coconut oil based product, or non-fragrance lotion will all work.
- Don’t use raw oils/petroleum based products for 2-7 days (depending on person) as it could pull out the ink. After its already in the healing/scabbing/itchy phase its ok to use in small amounts (antibiotic cream on pink/red areas for example)
4. Avoid Sun Exposure
- Keep the tattoo covered or out of direct sunlight while healing.
- In Bali’s tropical climate, sun protection is especially critical for tattoo healing.
- After healing, always apply SPF 30+ when exposed to sun.
5. Be Careful with Water
- Avoid swimming, soaking, or hot tubs for 2–3 weeks.
- Quick showers are fine—no scrubbing!
- Bali’s humidity can affect healing, so ensure tattoo stays clean and dry.
6. Wear Loose, Clean Clothing
- Avoid tight or abrasive clothing that may rub the tattoo.
- Choose soft, breathable fabrics – especially important in tropical weather.
7. Don’t Pick or Scratch
- Expect some itching and peeling, when this happens use cotton pad soaked in warm/hot water and blot the affected area. 100% avoid scratching with nails
- Never pick at scabs or peel the skin.
- Try to pat the itchy area with your hand/tee shirt vs scratching
8. Keep It Clean
- Gently wash the tattoo 1–2 times daily.
- Avoid excess dirt, sweat, or contact with unclean surfaces.
- In tropical climates, extra attention to cleanliness prevents infection.
9. Watch for Signs of Infection
- Monitor for unusual redness, swelling, pus, or excessive pain.
- Contact a professional if symptoms worsen.

Tattoo Healing Timeline
During Tattoo: Getting Fresh Ink
As you’re getting your new ink, you can expect mild redness/irritation to light bleeding during and immediately after (your artist will clean as you go and it should be done/stopped by the time the tattoo session is over)
Days 1-3: Initial Healing
Your tattoo will be red, slightly swollen, and may ooze plasma or excess ink. This is normal. Keep it clean and apply thin layers of aftercare ointment.
Week 1: Scabbing Phase
Light scabbing and peeling will begin. The tattoo may appear dull or flaky. Do not pick at scabs – let them fall naturally. Continue gentle washing and moisturizing.
Weeks 2-3: Final Healing
Most visible healing completes. The tattoo may still feel slightly raised or sensitive. Continue sun protection and moisturizing as the deeper layers of skin fully heal.
Tattoo Aftercare in Bali’s Tropical Climate
Healing a tattoo in Seminyak’s tropical environment requires special attention:
Humidity Management: Bali’s high humidity can slow healing and increase infection risk. Keep your tattoo as dry as possible between cleaning and moisturizing sessions. Use air conditioning when available to reduce moisture exposure.
Sun Protection: The tropical sun in Bali is intense year-round. Always keep fresh tattoos covered when outdoors. After healing, religiously apply high-SPF sunscreen to preserve your tattoo’s color and prevent fading.
Beach and Pool Activities: Avoid ocean swimming and pools for at least 3 weeks. Saltwater and chlorine can damage healing tattoos. If you’re visiting Bali for vacation and plan beach activities, schedule your tattoo accordingly.
Air Circulation: While keeping the tattoo clean, ensure it gets adequate air circulation to breathe. Avoid tight clothing in the humid climate, which can trap moisture against healing skin.
Common Tattoo Side Effects
It is common to experience some sort of redness and swelling for the first few days (this should gradually reduce within 3-5 days), itching and peeling is very common during the healing process, similar to what you would experience with a sunburn (dead skin flakes off), avoid scratching and peeling at your tattoo, if you need to use a fragrance free lotion. You can also experience light scabbing (if thick/heavy scabs you will want to bring up to us immediately as it could mean infection), let those fall off naturally. You may also experience excess ink leakage or weeping (Ink, blood, and plasma might seep from the tattoo for the first 24–48 hours), just wash gently and pat dry if this occurs.
Lastly its worth mentioning that if you get a larger tattoo (especially if its your first), its pretty common to get some sort of a fever or even flu like symptoms in the next 12-24hrs after your first session.
Less Common Tattoo Side Effects
These are less common but worth mentioning in general…
- Allergic Reactions- some people react to certain ink colors (red and yellow for example), symptoms would include rash, bumps and swelling around the tattoo, if this lasts more then a few days then consult a doctor, please let us know after that first day.
- Infections- This can happen from poor aftercare or if artists are using unsterile tools (at Primitive Tattoo for example we use all new needles every single time, sterilize and wrap all surfaces in tattoo prep, ensuring a sterile environment)
- Tattoo Blowout- This is when ink spreads beneath the skin, causing a blurry or smudged look and this is caused by the needle going too deep (not dangerous but usually permanent (can be corrected with touchup or laser)
- Raised Scars or Keloids- People who are already prone to keloids may form raised, thick scars which may occur during the healing (after tattoo) or after trauma to the area.
